Black Founder Raises $100M to Expand the First Online Community College in the US

Tade Oyerinde, an African American entrepreneur, has raised over $100 million for Campus, the first national online community college that aims to provide affordable, quality higher education. Launched in 2022, Campus aims to give students access to quality education without student debt.

Campus, founded by Oyerinde, offers accredited associate degrees in business administration and applied artificial intelligence to students across the U.S. In California, students also have access to specialized programs such as paralegal studies and AWS cloud administration. High school students can take free summer courses to earn college credits.

Oyerinde created Campus to make top-tier education available to everyone, regardless of income or background.

“It’s really simple -- in America we should have elite education for everyone -- everyone should be able to learn from the top professors in the country, develop useful skills and then go on to use those skills to create a great life for themselves,” Oyerinde said, according to AfroTech. “And this should all be possible without going into debt – that’s what we’re building here at Campus.”

In 2023, Campus raised $29 million in Series A funding from investors like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Discord Founder Jason Citron. In 2025, the platform secured $46 million in Series B funding, bringing its total to over $100 million. The new funding will help expand the platform, hire more educators, expand course offerings, and upgrade its technology.

General Catalyst Chairman Ken Chenault has joined Campus’ board, expressing support for the platform’s innovative approach to higher education. Chenault highlighted that the rising cost of traditional degrees has made higher education less accessible, and Campus is addressing this gap with technology and high-quality instruction.

Other investors in the latest round include Founders Fund, 8VC, Bloomberg Beta, Rethink Education, Figma’s Dylan Field, Notion’s Akshay Kothari, and Max Altman.
