CEO of 72-Year-Old Black-Owned Construction Firm in Atlanta to Hit $1 Billion in Revenue

Michael B. Russell Sr

Michael B. Russell Sr., CEO of H.J. Russell & Co., a Black-owned construction firm in Atlanta, Georgia, aims to reach $1 billion in revenue by 2029. Russell sees the target as a key goal for growth, expecting a major boost from mission-critical projects like data centers, healthcare facilities, and affordable housing.

Currently, the firm generates about $300 million in revenue. Russell plans to achieve the $700 million increase by focusing on projects for Fortune 100 companies, driven by growing demand for technology infrastructure, especially due to AI advancements. While he did not name specific clients, he said H.J. Russell is already working on major projects for Fortune 100 companies.

The firm also continues its modular construction work in aviation. It is a key partner in the $1.4 billion Concourse D widening at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The project, part of the ATLNEXT capital improvement program, will add more gates and amenities while reducing airline disruptions. H.J. Russell previously worked on a modular expansion at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 2022.

As large companies pull back on diversity and inclusion efforts, Russell believes his firm will continue to thrive. "It's about meeting a capacity need that these companies need to operate, not just a handout," Russell told Black Enterprise.

Founded in 1952 by H.J. Russell, Michael's father, the company has gone on to build many iconic projects like the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, State Farm Arena, and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. With strong industry demand and strategic expansion, the firm sees a clear path to reaching its revenue milestone.
