Black Couple Makes History Again, Acquires 120-Room Full Service Hotel in Louisiana After Raising $2.8M

AJA Investments, led by Norland and Dr. Amina James, Acquania Escarne, and Richard and Janelle Howard, has acquired a 120-room full-service hotel in Lake Charles, Louisiana in a historic deal. This marks the second hotel acquisition for Norland and Dr. Amina James who are also the owners of the Quality Inn Memphis Northeast.

The project is backed by a group of majority Black investors and is being managed by a Black-owned management company — Synergy Hospitality Group. AJA Investments raised an impressive $2.8M to seal the deal on the 82,000 sq. foot Louisiana property. Renovations are currently underway to convert the hotel to an upscale Wyndham destination complete with a restaurant, bar, and meeting space.

The Wyndham Lake Charles boasts a two-story lobby with charming black and white tiled flooring and an abundance of natural light. As soon as guests step inside, they’ll be met with the elements of style, comfort, and affordable luxury. The newly branded hotel restaurant — Renaissance Bar & Grill — will soon feature southern comfort food with a Creole flair! To add a twist to the new hang-out spot, the owners have commissioned a mixologist to create a signature drink for the bar which will be available in the Fall.

Speaking of the plans to upgrade the property, Dr. Amina comments, “We’re creating a space that is for everyone. It will be the perfect choice of accommodations for vacations, family reunions, and business trips alike.” Though renovations are slated to last into early 2025; the hotel is currently operating and open for reservations.

Lake Charles is a quaint city in southwest Louisiana touted as “Louisiana’s playground.” Nestled along the shores of Lake Charles and the Calcasieu River, this area is a blend of Cajun, Creole, and Native American influences. Lake Charles is just over two hours drive from Houston and three hours from New Orleans and is also accessible by major airlines. The picturesque bayou locale is also the backdrop for 70 annual festivals which bring thousands of visitors to the city throughout the year.

Dr. Amina's husband, Norland, is excited about what the future holds for the couple's newest Wyndham location. He comments “Lake Charles is such a great place to visit with family and friends.
