Black Mom of 3 Quits Job, Launches Nail Polish Line That Caters to Women with Darker Skin

Jacqueline Carrington

Meet Jacqueline Carrington, a wife and mother of 3 children from Los Angeles, who is the founder and CEO of People of Color, a Black-owned nail polish brand that was created to complement the various shades of brown skin. She had worked in the hospitality industry and the property management industry before leaving her job to pursue a dream as a full-time entrepreneur.

When she was young, Jacqueline said she was not interested in wearing nail polish because she had never seen nail polish on brown hands. But she was inspired to start the business when she saw her daughter with her nails painted after visiting her grandma's house.

That's when Jacqueline, a graduate from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, who has experience working in the hospitality industry for 6 years and the property management industry for another 6 years, decided to quit her job to start People of Color. She created the brand with the aim to celebrate and represent people of color through nail polish.

"It just feels a little different when you see something that is trying to speak directly to you and is shown and represented through everything that the brand does, including the ownership," Carrington said in an interview with ABC News.

People of Color features several shades of nail polish that are vegan, non-toxic, cruelty-free, and 10-free, which means it is free from the 10 most common toxins. It is available at their partner boutiques and salons in California and other states. It can also be purchased on the brand's website, as well as online on Urban Outfitters and Lord & Taylor.
