Meet the Black Female Founder Who Has Reinvented Bartering to Help Black Entrepreneurs Hire and Grow

Barter Black® is giving Black entrepreneurs another way to turn what they already have into what they need next.

Nicole Murphy, Founder of Barter Black

What if one of the resources an entrepreneur needs to grow their business is already sitting inside another entrepreneur’s business? From websites and bookkeeping to marketing, automation, legal support, and business strategy, entrepreneurs constantly need resources that can move their companies forward. At the same time, many are sitting on valuable skills, products, services, and expertise of their own.

Nicole Murphy saw an opportunity in that gap and created Barter Black®, a membership-based bartering platform and community for Black entrepreneurs and startup founders. “Entrepreneurs already have so much value inside their businesses,” she says. “We have skills, services, products, and knowledge. Barter Black® gives us another way to put that value to work.”

Bartering Without the Direct Swap

Traditional bartering usually requires two people to want exactly what the other person offers. Barter Black® removes that limitation. Members provide products or services to other members and earn Barter Bucks®, the trade credits used inside the community. One Barter Buck® has the same value as one dollar when members price their offers. For example, a business owner could provide a service valued at $500 and earn 500 Barter Bucks®. She could then use 300 with a bookkeeper and 200 with a photographer. Neither business has to need the service she originally sold. She can earn from one business and spend with another.

“That is what makes this different,” Murphy said. “You do not have to find someone who wants exactly what you sell at the exact moment you need what they offer.” Barter Black® officially launched in February 2022 using direct exchanges. After seeing the limitations of one-to-one trades, she changed the model. In August 2024, Barter Bucks® were introduced, separating earning from spending and creating a more flexible way to barter. Since then, more than 60,000 Barter Bucks® have been exchanged across the ecosystem. Members have used them for websites, bookkeeping, legal services, marketing, automation, content creation, business strategy, merchandise, and other business needs. Barter Bucks® is now also a federally registered trademark.

More Than a Way to Trade

Murphy is clear that Barter Black® is not designed to replace money. “Businesses need cash,” she said. “The goal is not to eliminate money. It is to recognize that cash is not the only asset entrepreneurs have to build with.” When members use Barter Bucks® for certain needs, they can preserve more cash for expenses that require it while still moving other parts of their businesses forward.

Barter Black® is membership-based because it is designed to be more than a one-time swap. Membership supports the technology, trade-credit system, and community infrastructure that allow entrepreneurs to earn with one business and spend with another. Recent customer discovery conversations reinforced that members are most interested in offers that solve real, timely needs and take meaningful work off their plates. That feedback is helping Barter Black® focus on making the marketplace more useful and relevant.

Black Businesses Becoming Resources for One Another

For Murphy, the larger vision goes beyond bartering. Conversations about supporting Black businesses often focus on consumers buying Black. She believes another part deserves just as much attention: Black businesses hiring, referring, and buying from one another. “We talk a lot about supporting Black businesses,” she said. “I want us to also think about what happens when Black businesses become resources for one another. That is where I believe there is an incredible opportunity.” Sometimes growth does not require another course or late-night learning a skill outside your expertise. Sometimes growth means hiring someone who already knows how to do the work, and Barter Black® gives entrepreneurs another way to make that hire.

Murphy calls the larger vision Black Wall Street Reimagined, not as an attempt to recreate the past, but as a way to take the principles of entrepreneurship, community and economic circulation and build them into something today’s entrepreneurs can use. On February 19, 2027, Barter Black® will celebrate five years since its official launch with the inaugural BarterCon™ in Landover, Maryland. The hands-on business conference is being designed around a simple promise: Come with a need. Leave with progress. “There is already so much talent and value within our community,” she said. “Imagine what becomes possible when we create better ways for that value to move.” Sometimes the next resource an entrepreneur needs is not something they have to create from scratch. It may already exist in someone else’s business.
