Black Entrepreneur Partners With Hospitals to Help Patients Overcome Medical-Related Hair Loss With Her Specialized Haircare Products

Cindy Tawiah, founder and CEO of Diva By Cindy, is bringing compassionate haircare into hospital retail settings. Her natural, alcohol-free products are sold at St. Agnes Hospital and GBMC Hospital, reaching women seeking support for shedding, breakage, thinning, and tangles. She is a former registered nurse with 13 years of nursing experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Health Studies. Her healthcare background gives her a deep appreciation for the emotional challenges women can face when illness or medical treatment changes their appearance.

Her brand serves women navigating hair changes associated with medical conditions and treatments, including chemotherapy patients seeking gentle care for their remaining hair or hair as it grows back. With shampoos, conditioners, and a signature Leave-In Detangler, the brand focuses on moisture, manageability, and reducing styling-related breakage. These products support everyday haircare rather than treating the medical causes of hair loss. For Cindy, having her products sold at St. Agnes Hospital represents a meaningful return to the hospital where she once worked. The brand’s presence at GBMC Hospital further extends her mission of helping women feel supported, cared for, and confident.

Her entrepreneurial journey began in Ghana, where a chemistry teacher inspired her love of beauty and science at age 16. After pursuing nursing, Tawiah followed her dream of opening a salon and later developing her own haircare brand. Her vision also led to a natural haircare vending machine at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, creating another way to make her products accessible while opening doors for a Black woman-owned business.

Her commitment to women extends beyond haircare. In 2004, she launched The Diva Project, providing pampering, encouragement, and self-esteem experiences for women experiencing homelessness and survivors of domestic violence. As a survivor herself, Tawiah has made compassion and service central to her work. A portion of Diva By Cindy's proceeds supports this mission. She also owns The Diva Day Spa & Healing Center in Upperco, Maryland, a welcoming sanctuary dedicated to healing, change, and transformation through services that nurture the mind, body, and soul.

As Diva By Cindy pursues additional hospital and retail partnerships, Tawiah continues to connect her healthcare experience with her entrepreneurial purpose: helping women care for themselves and feel valued throughout life’s transitions.
