Meet the Owners of Ghana’s Largest Black-Owned Avis and Budget Rent a Car Franchise, Operating a Fleet of Nearly 100 Vehicles

A pioneering African American–Ghanaian partnership is expanding mobility, ownership, and opportunity across West Africa.

Mona Boyd and Mawuli Dzebu

When Mona Boyd took the bold step to own and operate both Avis and Budget Rent a Car in Ghana, she was not simply launching a business. She was making history. Today, she stands among a small number of Black women globally to own and operate major international mobility franchises, a milestone that resonates across Africa and the global African diaspora.

“For me, it was never just about cars. It was about creating access,” says Boyd. “Mobility means opportunity. It’s the freedom to explore, to build, and to connect.”

Through her leadership of Landtours Ghana, alongside Avis Rent a Car, Budget Rent a Car Ghana, and the newly redeveloped AnoMansa Beach Resort in Elmina, Boyd and her business partner, Mawuli Dzebu, have built one of the most integrated travel and hospitality ecosystems in West Africa. Together, they are reshaping how travelers move through Ghana by combining transportation, tours, and coastal hospitality under one unified vision.

“Reliable mobility is the backbone of any strong tourism and business economy,” says Mawuli Dzebu, CEO and Partner. “What we are building goes beyond fleet size. We are setting professional standards, investing in local talent, and ensuring that visitors and businesses can move through Ghana with confidence, efficiency, and trust. Ownership matters, but so does execution.”

Boyd’s journey reflects a broader narrative of resilience, representation, and responsibility. Her investments demonstrate that when members of the African diaspora commit to building in Africa, they do more than return. They create pathways for employment, skills transfer, and long-term economic empowerment.

“We’re not just telling stories of return,” Boyd adds. “We’re building legacies rooted in partnership, excellence, and shared growth.”
