Dr. Boyce Watkins, a nationally respected Finance PhD and founder of The Black Business School, is warning that America’s sports betting explosion has reached dangerous levels.
In a recent viral tweet, Dr. Watkins declared: “I’m a finance professor who’s married to an addiction expert: The sports betting situation is what we refer to as Financial Fentanyl. This crisis will reach a breaking point when someone prominent loses their life. It’s going to be that ugly.”Dr. Watkins spent 12 years on the finance faculty at Syracuse University before launching The Black Business School, which has helped millions of people learn to invest and build generational wealth. Each morning, he teaches over 10,000 students for free in his Money in the Morning Financial Consciousness Class — where he breaks down economic trends, wealth-building strategies, and the psychology of money.
To join the class, text the word "money" to the number 87948.
“This isn’t about entertainment anymore,” Dr. Watkins explained. “Sports betting has become a weaponized addiction model. It targets the brain the same way fentanyl does — by giving people short-term euphoria while slowly destroying their financial stability. We’re watching a crisis unfold in real time, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.”
Dr. Watkins, author of the bestselling book The 10 Commandments of Black Economic Power, and his wife, Dr. Alicia Watkins, a licensed therapist and full professor of social work, have both spoken out about the intersection between money, psychology, and addiction. Together, they are pushing for greater education and awareness before the crisis spirals out of control.
