This Black-Owned Salon Does Not Service Women With Straight Hair

Camille Janae, founder and owner of Mahogany and Rose Hair Studio

Camille Janae, the founder and owner of Mahogany and Rose Hair Studio, a Black-owned salon based in Sacramento, California, says that she caters exclusively to those seeking services for their natural hair. Unlike other salons, she only specializes in textured hair care services such as curly haircuts and loc maintenance.

As Mahogany and Rose Hair Studio strives to provide excellent services for textured hair, Janae decided to not provide any services for straight hair. They are not offering services that involve blowing out or straightening the hair as well.

While it was easy for those with straight hair or wanting to have straight hair to find a salon that caters to their needs, it was hard to find services for those wanting to wear their hair naturally curly or textured. That's why Janae committed to focusing on exclusively providing services for clients with curly hair, which she felt is "really needed," she told ABC10.

Since opening her own salon in 2018, Janae has had clients from Sacramento and from other cities and states. Aside from providing hair services, Mahogany and Rose also aims to make their clients empowered to care for their hair properly by educating them with techniques specific to their needs.

"It brings me a lot of joy being able to offer a service where they don't leave feeling beautiful like they're a different person, they just feel like more themselves," Janae said. "So it's really my focus to empower them to be able to just bring out their natural beauty."
