Meet the Women Raising Funds to Build a Black-Owned Resort Style Community in Georgia

Marlena Barnett and Shandrena Hadjamara, co-founders of Lakes of Summerville

Meet Shandrena Hadjamara and Marlena Barnett, two African American real estate developers and investors, who are raising capital to build the first Black-owned resort-style community in Summerville, Georgia. Their real estate project will be eco-friendly and will use solar energy as a primary source of power to preserve the environment.
Located right off of Hwy 337 about 90 miles north of Atlanta, the 128.6-acre community will be called Lakes of Summerville and it will be one of the first Black-woman owned real estate projects in the country to feature energy-efficient homes, vacation rentals, a clubhouse, fishing at natural lakes, bike trails, swimming pools, and a miniature golf course.

As the masterminds behind the project, Marlena serves as President and Liaison Community Developer of the company, and Shandrena is the Vice President as well as the Chief Bioengineer. To raise funds quickly for this unique project, they have launched a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe and donations are being accepted via CashApp ($lakesofsummerville).

“We are seeking donors and investors to help purchase land that will be used for agriculture and living space,” said Marlena.

“With our project, we are striving to break free from the Systematic Living of uncontrollable rising rent, chemical infused foods, restrained education, as well as the untold truths of history,” she added. Marlena is a wearer of many hats and besides being a mother and a wife, she is also a published author and an accomplished entrepreneur.

The Lakes of Summerville is also emerging as a ‘village of sustainability’ with an inspiring vision and mission to bring together like-minded business individuals to create a dynamic Black-owned property development company. With all it's amenities, buyers will be offered 12-month interest-free financing with no credit check and $1,000 towards the closing costs.

Shandrena comments, “Our project is a place where sustainability is imperative, and we are highly focused on using solar energy as our primary source of power to preserve the environment.” Both women strongly feel that sustainable living and renewable energy are the only way to the future if the world wants to preserve the planet for future generations.
