Surely, you've heard before that "diamonds are a girl's best friend," but diamonds can also become a lucrative business. Just ask gemologist and custom jewelry designer, Zenobia Morrow, who is now up to her elbows in diamonds as a professional gemologist.
How her sparkling career started
Morrow always had a strong interest in fine jewelry, especially diamonds. Her hometown is Atlanta, Georgia, but now she works as a private jeweler in Los Angeles. After graduating from Howard University, where she received a degree in design, she continued to nurture this interest by studying gemology at the Gemological Institute of America in New York. Now she was ready to use this knowledge to create her dream career.
Her next step was hooking up with a diamond house which enabled her to work from her home in Los Angeles where she services and custom designs fine jewelry. She can create custom engagement rings for clients throughout the country. As she recently told Essence Magazine, "I love the craftsmanship aspect of it and the science. Jewelry blends all of those elements together into a piece of art that you can wear."
Her advice to others
Morrow advises others who want to get into the fine jewelry business that 3 important steps are necessary in order to be successful. First, it is important to know the industry. Second, get as much hands-on experience as you can. Third, find your own niche where you can be effective as well as happy. That's really good advice from someone who knows how diamonds really can be a girl's best friend -- and career!
