Many new businesses are launched as a result of the business owner wanting to solve a problem, or provide a service or product that is sorely needed. Take hair care for Black women, for example. It takes time and a stylist who specializes in ethnic hair to do it right, not to mention the extra time involved in traveling to the salon and back.
But, what if the salon brought their specialized services to the client? One entrepreneur, Antonia Opiah from Brooklyn, NYC, has done just that. She has launched her very own mobile hair salon service!
"Bringing it" on
Antonia with the help of her sister, Abigail, launched their new service, Yeluchi by Un-ruly, because they both disliked having to drive to hair appointments and wait to have their hair done. Research told them there was no one else in the marketplace who was providing home hair styling services for black women, so they decided to do it.
The salon specializes in braided styles and weave installations, cornrows and flat twists, box braids and twists, and half and full weave installations. Opiah's sister is a New York-based PR strategist whose clients have included some impressive companies, like Rémy Cointreau USA, Pantene Pro-V and Dewar’s Scotch. Together, they are providing a much-needed service for black women in select NYC areas.
So, what's next?
They are taking their time to hire only the best hairstylists because they want to do it right. They are funding their business out of their own pocket and want to continue to become familiar with their customer base and provide high-quality salon services that will help them grow.
