Thugs Gone Good -- From Gang Banging to Owning a Successful Catering Service!

Trap Kitchen LA

Launched in 2013, Trap Kitchen, a Los Angeles-based food catering and delivery service, is a successful Black-owned business run by two former rival gang members. Malachi Jenkins, co-founder of the company, was once a member of the Crips; and Roberto Smith, his business partner, was once a member of the Bloods. But the two have put aside their differences to come together to create unity... and revenue!

Both were introduced to each other by a mutual friend, and both agreed that they were tired of the gang life and tired of hustling drugs. So, they decided to create a company that serves five star restaurant meals without the five star prices.

What's on the menu?

Located at 12704 S. Figueroa Street in Los Angeles, they serve a delicious BBQ dinner of chicken legs, wings, beef short ribs, beef hotLinks, and pork ribs/ links.

They also serve a spectacular meal called King Crab Jambalaya, which includes king crab meat, craw fish tail meat, chicken, smoked chicken sausage (beef casing), shrimp , sautéed and simmered with celery, onions, and more -- and is served over penne or angel hair pasta with a side caesar salad and confetti bread.

But wait, there's more...

Also on the menu are chicken chops, turkey chops, pork chops, skirt steak, and side options of mixed greens w/ cabbage and smoked turkey tails, green beans w/ potatoes, smoked turkey tails, 4cheese mac, shrimp mac attack, white rice, garlic mashed potatoes, lobster mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, and apple cinnamon cornbread or dinner roll.

Giving back

As the business continues to grow, both Malachi and Roberto have agreed to hire local help and especially try to help other men like themselves who want to live better lives.
