According to Forbes, the construction industry is showing continued strong growth across the country. In fact, as of 2016, construction is the fastest growing small-business sector, generating double-digit growth (10.6 percent) among those analyzed in one study. Contrary to popular belief, many of these successful construction firms are Black-owned!
Here are just six of some of the top Black-owned construction firms in the United States:
#1 - SLR Contracting & Service Company: Located in Buffalo, New York, SLR Contracting & Service Company, Inc. is a full service commercial, general construction company that was established in 1996 by by President and CEO Sundra L. Ryce. The company is a certified, 100 percent Minority and Woman Owned Business Enterprise, (WMBE) and has established a fine reputation reputation for providing complete, high-end, commercial construction services.
#2 - Coleman Construction: This Los Angeles-based construction firm was founded by Sharon Coleman in 1994 and offers a complete range of construction services, including commercial, governmental and institutional projects. Their work also includes private construction projects, non- profit organization construction work, and improvements to tenant properties.
#3 - ENVIRO AgScience, Inc.: This construction company is headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina, with an office in Atlanta. The company provides general contracting services and management, and architectural services, as well as design-build landscaping and consulting services for both domestic and international markets.
#4 - H.J. Russel & Company: This Atlanta, Georgia-based company offers general construction, real estate development, program management and property management services. The company was founded by Herman J. Russell, who took over his father's plastering company in 1957 and developed one of the most successful African-American-owned real estate development and construction companies in America.
#5 - Thor Construction: Thor Construction was founded in 1980 and is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesotate. Their services include general contracting, design, consulting, and construction management. The global company has a client list that includes partnering in the new Vikings Stadium, expanding the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, and building a 5,000 square foot store for designer Carolina Herrera in Las Vegas.
#6 - Powers & Sons Construction Company: This construction firm was founded in 1967 by Mamon Powers Sr. The family-run business began as a premier home building firm but is now a contractor, construction manager, design builder and project management company. They are headquartered in northwest Indiana with offices in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinois.
