Black-Owned Vegan Cookie Brand Sees 10,000% Spike in Sales

Maya Madsen, founder of Maya's Cookies

Maya's Cookies, a San Diego, California-based Black-owned vegan cookie brand, has notably experienced a 10,000% increase in their sales even during the pandemic. Maya Madsen, its founder and owner, believes the growing support came after the recent rebirth of the Black Lives Matter movement.
When the COVID-19 pandemic started, Maya's Cookies struggled with keeping the business afloat that it initially had to let go of almost half of its employees. But things drastically turned around when more Black people started supporting Black-owned businesses.

"With the horrific death of George Floyd, we have all witnessed this awakening in America of people finally ready to take action to address racial inequality and injustice," Madsen told VegNews. "There has been this incredible surge of people wanting to do something to support Black communities and specifically Black-owned businesses."

Since then, the company has seen a huge increase in demand, requiring it to increase staff and production, expand the kitchen, and have a warehouse and shipping facility. At the same time, Madsen is also able to continue supporting other local small businesses with its supplies.

Madsen, who is a vegan herself, started creating her own recipe of cookies when she wasn't able to find sweet yummy vegan cookies in the market. Founded in 2015, Maya's Cookies is now considered as the fastest-growing Black-owned gourmet vegan cookie company.

Maya's Cookies offers a wide variety of cookies from the usual Chocolate Chip Cookies, Snickerdoodle to unique flavors such as Caramel Pecan and White Chocolate Espresso. The cookies are available at several farmers' markets and local retailers as well as online with nationwide delivery.
